In this movement class we will explore different possibilities to improvise with movement, individually and as a group. After a warm-up, that focusses on breath and energy flow, we will do exercises that work with movement imagination and exploration. We will pay attention to aspects of performativity, such as muscle tonus, presence, relationality or focus. The class will include some partner exercises and simple scores. We will be working individually in a group, but also in physical contact and proximity to others.
A certain level of physical fitness and experience in moving will be required.

Lektüreseminar mit Praxisreflektion und Gäst:innen
Reading Seminar with reflection about practises and guests
In order to create or view art, we must always consider its production conditions: we submit applications, organise rehearsals, address specific audiences, invite collaborators, and are employed by orchestras. While engaging with the means of artistic production is not always a conscious or even reflective process, it nevertheless has a significant impact on our everyday lives as artists. Within contemporary theatre studies and musicology, this engagement is reflected in praxeological methods and approaches that are increasingly influenced by decolonial and power-critical fields of theory and deal with working methods and means of production, institutions and forms of organisation in the arts. In this seminar, we will first read authors such as Bojana Kunst, Ulrike Hartung and Grada Kilomba to gain a basic understanding of such praxeological theory formation for the performing arts. We will then invite guests and participants to share examples of their own work in order to facilitate a joint, theory-informed reflection on working methods and forms of work. Part of the seminar will involve reading texts, presenting examples of participants' own practices, and visiting artists and creators from all areas of the perfor-ming arts, such as music theatre, concert music, theatre and performance.

This seminar examines interconnected cultural articulations within the Black Atlantic through the sonic and social space of the Jamaican soundsystem. Bass-heavy sound cultures, circulating transnationally, mobilize bodies in ways that echo the tilted, eccentric, and grotesque movements popularized during early twentieth-century cakewalk crazes. Tracing a lineage from cakewalk to contemporary bass culture, the seminar reads these embodied practices through Deleuze and Guattari’s concept of deterritorialization, foregrounding dance as a force that unsettles spatial, social, and corporeal norms. Combining historical research, theoretical discussion, and artistic experimentation, participants will develop solo or collective musical and/or dance performances, which will be shown at the HMDK’s annual summer festival „Hock am Turm“.
Participants are invited to a performative field trip across haunted terrains and alternative lifeworlds. Drawing on Mark Fisher’s theorization of the weird and the eerie, and Wilhelm Heinrich Rühl’s understanding of wandering as an empirical method, we trace abandoned bunkers, castle ruins, former military training areas, healing springs, and encounter anthroposophist farmers and beauticians. Together we drift through landscapes and engage with specific sites through affect, intuition and corporeal memory. We move by foot, gesture, and score; and explore critical and collective modes of cartography.
The field trip (Exkursion) will take place in collaboration with Prof. Charlotte Eifler and students of the HfG Karlsruhe.

Excursion to the Ruhrtriennale International Festival Campus in Bochum, 27–30 August, 2026
A CAMPUS GEGENWART excursion for students of the HMDK Stuttgart
The Ruhrtriennale is an international festival focusing on music theatre and cross-genre productions, ranging from new forms of opera to concert formats, dance, drama and visual arts. It takes place annually in the Ruhr region in late summer, with a particular emphasis on new productions developed for industrial heritage sites – including steel halls, coking plants and machine houses from the former mining and steel industries.
The Ruhrtriennale Festival Campus is a four-day international exchange platform for students, teachers and cultural practitioners from a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds. In addition to visits to the festival’s performances, installations and exhibitions, the Festival Campus offers artist talks, critical discussions and, above all, the opportunity to engage with international artists and students from various artistic disciplines. During the day, workshops on the theme of ‘Communications about Art’ will take place. The central question is: How do we communicate with one another (about art)? How can we have an exchange about the works we have experienced by speaking, listening, writing, dancing, singing, performing or responding (artistically) in other ways?
It is the second time, that the HMDK Stuttgart will be taking part in the Festival Campus.
There are 12 places available for HMDK students. The Festival Campus workshops will be held in English!
Participation in the entire excursion is mandatory. If you would like to join us, please send an email by 26 April at the latest to britta.wirthmueller@hmdk-stuttgart.de
with the subject “Ruhrtriennale” and a short letter of motivation in German or English: Why are you interested in taking part in the Ruhrtriennale Festival Campus? What do you associate with the theme: Communications about Art? How does this excursion relate to your studies?
Please also send me the following information:
Which study programme are you studying in at the HMDK?
Which semester are you in?
Can you take part in the excursion on all 4 days?
Students pay a contribution towards costs of €15 per day (€60 in total)
Outward journey: Thursday, 27 August 2026, departure in the morning
Return journey: Sunday, 30 August 2026, arrival late in the evening
Students will travel together from and to Stuttgart by train.
Accommodation in a hotel (twin room)
Breakfast (at the hotel) and one meal per day will be provided by the Festival Campus.
The excursion will be led by Prof. Britta Wirthmüller.
Preparatory meeting: Wednesday, 8 July 2026, 5.00–6.00 pm
